The catalyst to create the BODY collection came from an inspired moment when Dainy was in a dance class in New York - she noticed the effortless way the dancers adapted their rehearsal gear, changing this piece for that, rolling down hemlines and instantly transforming their look for the street. BODY the brand was born, literally, the moment she got back to her hometown of Melbourne. Combining the aesthetic and function of dancewear with the skills and passion of her craft, the first collection was designed, pattern drafted, cut and sewn by Dainy in her tiny studio in Elwood.

The concept of this type of wearable and versatile fashion was new in the industry. After one season of wholesaling to boutiques, Dainy’s strong belief in her concept meant she refused to dilute it, and the first BODY retail boutique opened in the seaside town of St Kilda where Dainy was able to personally demonstrate her unique way of dressing, layering and transforming, directly to her customer. This paved the path for more boutiques opening, and the expansion of the brand both nationally and internationally.

In a competitive market and after 12 years, BODY by Dainy Sawatzky continues to attract a loyal following, which is testament to the designer’s belief in the core values of the brand which have always been its foundation: genuine passion, original thought, quality craftsmanship and an understanding of real women.

BODY is also committed to practices that address the issues of sustainability in the areas of social, environmental and economic factors. The how and where her garments are produced is also important, therefore the brand is still predominately produced locally and supports the Australian fashion industry.
